Benoquin (Monobenzone) for Vitiligo
Overview
Benoquin is a topical prescription drug approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for removing pigment in people with vitiligo that covers more than 50 percent of their body.1,2 The skin bleaching effects of Benoquin are permanent and irreversible.1,3
Benoquin may be an option for adults who have little remaining pigment and haven’t responded to other vitiligo treatments.3
How do I take it?
Benoquin is applied two to three times daily as a treatment for vitiligo.1 Depigmentation may begin in one to four months. However, complete depigmentation can take up to four years.1,2 Prescribing information states that treatment should be discontinued if desired results are not achieved after four months of use.
The cream may also be used one to times weekly to maintain desired skin pigmentation after treatment is completed.2
Side effects
The FDA-approved label for Benoquin lists common side effects include mild, temporary skin irritation, and possible permanent hyperpigmentation of surrounding skin.1
Rare but serious side effects listed for Benoquin can include permanent increased sensitivity to sunlight, requiring lifelong sun protection.1,2
