Imatib 100 mg
Imatib is a tyrosine-kinase inhibitor. It is mainly used in the treatment of various types of cancer. The drug when taken destroys cancer cells by turning off tyrosine kinase.
Imatib is used to treat various types of cancer such as chronic myeloid leukaemia, acute lymphoblastic leukaemia, myelodysplastic /myeloproliferative diseases and gastrointestinal stromal tumours.
It is a chemotherapy medicine that works by stopping or slowing the growth of some types of gastrointestinal stromal tumours and myeloid leukaemia. It helps the body to prevent making abnormal cells which leads to growth of the tumours.
Do not take Imatib if you: are allergic to its active ingredient Imatinib or any other ingredient of the drug; are pregnant or planning to be pregnant; are breastfeeding your baby as the medicine may pass on to the breast milk and harm an unborn.
Tell your doctor if you: have bleeding problems; have heart problems such as heart failure; have kidney/liver disease; have anaemia; have white blood cell problems; have underactive thyroid; have fluid retention in your organs; are suffering from any other infection.
The dose of Imatib is based on your medical condition, weight, age, response to treatment and also if you are taking any other medicines. You must reveal about all the medicines that you are taking currently to your doctor. Initially the dose may be less and subsequently it may be increased depending on the condition.
Imatib is to be taken by mouth with a glass full of water and with a meal and should not be crushed. If you find it difficult to swallow you can dissolve it in a glass of water or apple juice and drink it immediately. Imatib is usually taken once or twice a day as per the instruction of the doctor. You must finish the dose as prescribed by the doctor. Even if you feel better you must continue with the entire dose to get the maximum benefit. In case of overdose you must get in touch with your doctor immediately. It is preferable to take the dose at the same time everyday so that you do not miss the dose. However, if you have missed it, take Imatib when you remember provided it is not very close to the next dose. In such circumstances, skip the missed dose and continue with the original schedule. Taking more than one dose at the same time can lead to several side effects.
Some of the common side effects which you may experience include: upset stomach, vomiting, headache, diarrhoea, muscle/joint pain, dizziness, blurred vision, muscle cramps, drowsiness.
Some people may experience serious side effects as well such as: bleeding, sudden weight gain, unusual tiredness, swelling ankles/hands/abdomen/feet, shortness of breath, swelling around the eyes, black/bloody stool, fast heartbeat, symptoms of liver disease, signs of kidney problems, low back/side pain, muscle weakness, allergic reaction.
In case of serious side effects you must get medical attention immediately. If the common side effects persist for long then also you must visit the doctor. The above list is not the complete list of side effects and you may experience other discomforts as well and you must immediately get in touch with your doctor in case of any complication.
